The John Monteith Legacy Society

John Monteith

John Monteith served as a leader in the cultural, religious and educational development of Michigan in the early 1800s.

Glowingly described as an individualist, a classical scholar intolerant of wrong, John Monteith was a man of mental and physical courage and great versatility of mind.

Along with Detroit civic leaders Gabriel Richard and Judge Augustus B. Woodward, John Monteith drafted the first education law for the Michigan territory, which led to the founding of the University of Michigan in 1817. He was appointed as its first president. It can be said that the foresight of both Judge Woodward and John Monteith led to the organization of higher education in the State of Michigan and to the University of Michigan’s proud heritage of leadership.

The John Monteith Legacy Society

Just as the University of Michigan founders had a vision that would create an educational system of the future, so do the members of the John Monteith Legacy Society. Donors who generously support the University through planned giving provide the foundation for excellence for years to come.

Recognition

Recognition in the John Monteith Legacy Society is automatic upon receipt of notice that the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Dearborn or Flint Campus) is named as a charitable beneficiary of your retirement plan, estate, life insurance or annuity contract, or life income gift.

One of the ways to provide notice of a planned gift to the University is by completion of the Declaration of Future Intent form.

Members of the John Monteith Legacy Society receive:

• A subscription to Leaders & Best, the Office of University Development’s donor publication
• Invitations to periodic donor appreciation events
• A U-M memento of appreciation
